Please come join us for our April 2024 FCGS Meeting!

SPEAKER
Dr. William X Chavez, Jr. – New Mexico School of Mines

TALK TITLE
Economic Geology: The Science and Search for Mineral Resources

ABSTRACT

Economic Geology involves the application of geosciences – especially geologic understanding of essential earth processes – to the exploration for, and understanding the genesis of, mineral resources. Minerals have been mined since Paleolithic times, with the significance of metals in maintaining and improving human lives prompting the search for – and exploitation of – mineral resources since prehistoric times. Nonetheless, the science of economic geology had beginnings only in the early part of the 1900’s.

Importantly, the evolution of economic geology has taken two distinct branches: one is that involving genetic studies of mineral deposits, focused on how ore deposits are formed; the other based upon field-based exploration characteristics of mineral occurrences, emphasizing application of practical observations to generate ore targets. Because the need for mineral resources will continue to increase dramatically as societies attempt to comply with “green initiatives”, economic geologists will undertake even greater responsibilities to help provide the metals and minerals required.
