TITLE:  Groundwater Supply for Hard Rock Mines in the Desert SW U.S.

ABSTRACT:

Economic deposits of base and precious metals are found in abundance in the Southwest U.S. However, “economic” deposits require a sufficient water supply to mine and process the ores to extract the valuable metals. Without water, there can be no mining. Water supply in the dry Southwestern U.S. is challenging to say the least especially in recent decades as many factions vie for the limited supplies of groundwater and surface water. This talk will provide an overview of the efforts required to maintain a viable water supply for copper mines in Arizona. Tasks to be covered include:

  1. Water Usage in hard-rock mines
  2. Groundwater exploration – limitations, methods, and anecdotes
  3. Designing hard rock production wells
  4. Maintaining hard rock production well operations over time
  5. Future Challenges and opportunities for the next generation!
